Cost SAS 70 Audit | An Auditor’s Opinion on Pricing for SAS 70 Audits

What is the cost of a SAS 70 audit? As an auditor, i’m often asked this question by prospective clients who need to undergo a SAS 70 Type I or Type II audit.

First and foremost, pricing structures for SAS 70 audits have change dramatically in the past 36 months as a number of new SAS 70 audit providers have entered the field. The result? a decrease, i would argue, in the overall fees being charged to clients for SAS 70 audits.

Buyer beware, cheaper does not always mean you get what you pay for. In fact, a poor SAS 70 can lead to more problems than not having one at all. How’s that? Because the entities that rely on these reports and that must examine them (typically the Big Four Accounting Firms) will be asking you numerous questions about your report, the CPA firm who issued it, along with other “investigative” questioning.

Well, back to the cost of a SAS 70 audit. Fees generally should range from $15,000 to 20,000 for a Type I and $25,000 to $35-40,000 for a Type II. Remember, these are only ballpark figures and can go up or down depending on a number of factors, such as location of fieldwork, etc.
